The Greek national team ended their rather disappointing Euro 2020 qualifying campaign on a high note under new manager John van ’t Schip. Although the Dutchman got off to a poor start with the national team with two loses (away to Finland, Italy) and a draw (at home to Liechtenstein), he has led the Galanolefki to three consecutive wins in a qualifying campaign for the first time since 2016.

At that time, German boss, Michael Skibbe, was in charge of the national team, leading Greece to three straight wins to kick off the 2018 World Cup qualifying with wins away to Gibraltar (1-4), at home to Cyprus (2-0), and away to Estonia (0-2). Greece ended up claiming second place in the group and qualified for the World Cup qualifying playoffs where they were dumped out by eventual finalists Croatia.

Greece’s current three-game winning streak began with a 2-1 defeat of Bosnia-Herzegovina in Athens before Limnios’ sole marker in Yerevan was enough for Greece to defeat Armenia 0-1. The qualifying campaign ended with a great come from behind win over already-qualified Finland on Monday evening, a 2-1 result in Athens.

The last time Greece came from behind to register a victory was two years ago (October 27, 2017) in Nicosia against Cyprus in World Cup qualifying, Then, Pieros Sotiriou gave Cyprus the lead early on before first-half goals from Kostas Mitroglou and Alexandros Tziolis led Greece to a 1-2 victory.

Greece’s last come from behind victory at home was against Hungary in the final fixture of a disastrous Euro 2016 qualifying campaign. Greece fell behind in the score 1-2 before rallying to come away 4-3 winners in what was a thrilling matchup.
