Three teams to be relegated from 2018/2019 Super League

With the 2018/2019 Super League season due to start on August 25, time is running out in order to find a solution for the multiple problems which exist, but more information has become clear concerning future seasons.

16 clubs will participate in the 2018/2019 season, but according to various reports in the media, the Super League and Deputy Greek Minister for Culture and Sport George Vassiliadis have struck an agreement which will see 14 teams compete in the 2019/2020 campaign, before that amount is possibly reduced to 12 for 2020/2021. Nevertheless, a final decision for the 2020/2021 season depends on deals with broadcasting companies Nova and ERT. More negotiations are set to take place in the near future.

If the proposal to have 14 clubs playing in the 2019/2020 season becomes a reality, three teams will be relegated from the 2018/2019 Super League, while only one earns promotion from the Football League. However, at their Board of Directors meeting, the Football League decided to have two clubs promoted to the Super League, four relegated to the Gamma Ethniki and four coming up to the championship from the third tier. The spat between the Super League and Football League will be sorted out by the Hellenic Football Federation (EPO).

On August 9, the fixtures for the 2018/2019 Super League are due to be drawn up, however the complex issue of broadcasting contracts is yet to be resolved. At this moment in time, seven Super League teams (Panathinaikos, Aris, Atromitos, Xanthi, Panetolikos, Apollon Smyrnis, Lamia) are still without a television deal for the upcoming campaign and they are threatening to prevent the season from starting on time (August 25).

Right now, it’s highly unlikely that the campaign will start on August 25, meaning that the start date will be put back to either September 1 or September 15 (the Greek national team play against Estonia and Hungary in the UEFA Nations League on September 8 and 11). Further developments are expected in the coming week.
