A three-way battle for the top goal scorer in the Greek Super League has emerged as we enter the winter break and look ahead to 2020. Predictably, the three players ply their trade at the top three clubs on the ladder.

The leading marksman so far this season is Youssef El-Arabi of Olympiacos, with nine goals to his name. The Moroccan currently leads Portuguese forward Nelson Oliveira of AEK and Polish striker Karol Swiderski of PAOK, both of whom are on eight goals so far this season.

These three are the main strikers and sources of goals for their respective clubs, and it is no surprise they sit at the top of the goal-scoring charts.

For instance, El-Arabi has chipped in with just over 28% of the goals for the Reds to date (they have scored 32 goals overall in the 16 matches).

Aris and Panathinaikos do not have a single player in contention (currently) due to different reasons. Aris players appear to be sharing the goal-scoring burden as a three-pronged attack featuring Brown Ideye, Bruno Gama, and Nicolas Diguiny are all amongst the goals. Brown Ideye and Bruno Gama have six to their names. Meanwhile, Federico Macheda is Panathinaikos’ leading scorer with five goals, and only two of these strikes have come from open play, highlighting a severe offensive issue for the Greens.

Other notable efforts include Giorgos Manousos of Atromitos (seven goals), Lisandro Semedo (six goals), Bachana Arabuli (six goals), and Thuram (six goals). Manousos has faced several long-term injuries in recent years but has stayed fit and consistent for an Atromitos side who are not as strong as the last couple of seasons. OFI are the surprise packages of the season, and Semedo has been key to their rise. Interestingly, Arabuli has scored six out of the 13 scored by Panionios, contributing almost 50% of the goals. Thuram has been playing in Greece for numerous seasons, and his experience has been pivotal to Lamia’s turnaround after a poor start.

Here are the standings for the Greek Super League’s leading goal scorers after 16 rounds.

Youssef El-Arabi - 9 goals (Olympiacos)

Nelson Oliveira - 8 goals (AEK)

Karol Swiderski - 8 goals (PAOK)
