Trikala close in on promotion, Slip up for Ionikos, Key win for Diagoras

Trikala took a big step towards promotion with their win over Ierapetra while second-placed Ionikos slipped up away to Triglia. Diagoras Rodou, Niki Volou, Ierapetra, Kavala, and Veria all remain in the hunt for promotion with three games remaining.

A goal 14 minutes from time was enough for Trikala to come away 0-1 winners away to Ierapetra on Saturday. Tsipras was the hero for the visitors, who moved up to 46 points with the victory, six points clear of second-placed Ionikos, and eight points clear of third-placed Diagoras. Despite the loss, Ierapetra remain in the hunt for promotion, sitting tied for fourth place with Niki Volou on 37 points, three behind second-placed Ionikos. 

Ionikos’ struggles on the road continued on Sunday as they fell to relegation-bound Triglia 1-0. The game’s only goal came seven minutes from time through Papadimitriou to give Triglia their first win after seven tries (five losses, two draws). Triglia now sit second from bottom, four points away from safety with three games remaining. Ionikos remained winless on the round for a seventh consecutive game and continue to sit in second place on 40 points. However, Diagoras trail by two points while Niki Volou and Ierapetra trail by just three points. 

Diagoras’ hopes for promotion took a big boost on Sunday after their 0-1 win over Olympiacos Volou and Ionikos’ loss away to Triglia. Bourlakis’ goal on the stroke of half-time proved the difference in Volos. Diagoras are in third place, just two points behind second-placed Ionikos while Olympiacos Volou are in eighth place.

Niki Volou jumped into fourth place along with Ierapetra after a crucial 0-1 road win over Kavala. It was another match where one goal was enough for the winning side as Cruz stunned the home fans with his marker in second-half stoppage time. Niki Volou are just three points behind second-placed Ionikos while Kavala are in sixth, four points adrift promotion with three games remaining. 

In other action, Veria’s hopes for promotion took a heavy hit after playing to a 1-1 draw with bottom of the table Kalamata. Egaleo moved further away from the relegation zone with a 1-0 victory over Thesproros while Ialysos and Aspropyrgos played to a 1-1 draw, a result which benefits neither side in their fight to avoid the drop.
