Trikala move top, Important win for Veria in Crete

Trikala moved top of the Football League table with their road victory over Thesprotos, while Veria defeated Ierapetra in Crete and Olympiacos Volou and Ionikos played to a draw.

Trikala recorded a 1-2 away victory over Thesprotos and took over top spot in the Football League. After a dull first half, it was the visitors who struck first with Stamatis’ shot from close range finding the back of the net, however, the hosts quickly responded as Kollas leveled the match just five minutes later. But Papageorgiou rocketed home a half-volley from inside the penalty area with 13 minutes remaining to give his a very important win on the road. The result keeps Thesprotos in the relegation zone tied with Egaleo on eight points while Trikala move top of the table with 19 points.

In the weekend’s most anticipated fixture, Olympiacos Volou and Ionikos shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw. The Erythrolefki struck first after a goalless opening half with Pozoglou’s marker giving the hosts the lead in the 55th minute. Olympiacos Volou failed to capitalize on multiple opportunities to ensure their victory with a second goal and it was Ionikos who made them pay when Vlachomitros equalized from the penalty spot with just a minute remaining in regulation. The result does no favors to either club as Ionikos sit in second place, two points behind leaders Trikala, while Olympiacos Volou are tied for sixth with 13 points.

Veria escaped Crete with a narrow 0-1 victory despite playing 60 minutes with a man down. Bletsas was sent off in the 33rd minute, but the visitors struck in the 68th minute through Pasas to grab an important three points. The win moves Veria ahead of Ierapetra into fourth (tied with Kavala) while the Cretan side tasted two consecutive defeats for the first time this season and as a result, dropped to fifth with 14 points.

Tied with Veria in third are Kavala, who dropped two points away to Ialysos after the two teams played to a goalless draw on Sunday. Kalamata’s winless streak continued as they also drew at home to Aspropyrgos in a thrilling four-goal encounter. 

In other action, Egaleo’s struggles continued with Diagoras scoring two first-half goals to claim an easy 0-2 victory on the road while Triglia and Niki Volou played to a goalless draw.
