2019 has been a year to remember for Tsitsipas. Following his recent memorable triumph at the ATP World Tour Finals, the 21-year-old has now earned another impressive achievement, gaining more votes than both Giannis Antetokounmpo and Kristian Golomeev to be named the Best Male Athlete of 2019 at the PSPA Awards.

“Unfortunately, I can’t be there tonight as I’m abroad, but this is great news,” said Tsitsipas in a video message. “This is a great honour for me, it’s an important trophy. It is the best way to close out the year. There have been several difficult, stressful moments, but I will continue to work hard to try and improve next year.”

Stefanos’ father, Apostolos Tsitsipas, received the award on his son’s behalf.

Hugely successful pole vaulter Katerina Stefanidi received the title of the best Female Athlete of 2019. The male Olympiacos water polo club was named the top Greek team of the year, beating current Super League and Greek Cup champions PAOK to the prize. Interestingly, no PAOK representatives attended the ceremony on Monday.

Both Olympiacos and AEK received a special award for their initiative of inviting two female disabled fans to walk out with the teams before the Super League derby in October.
