This was the pair’s fifth meeting, with the four previous matches played in 2018. Thiem had a 3-1 head-to-head advantage with their last meeting coming at Roland Garros where Thiem defeated Tsitsipas in four sets.

Tsitsipas got off to a lightning start breaking Thiem and raced out to a 3/1 lead in the opening set. Serving for the set at 5-3, Tsitsipas hit three winners to take out the opening set in just 29 minutes.

The Greek played his best tennis throughout the second set, where he managed to only lose two points on his serve for the set. Tsitsipas mounted the pressure on Thiem’s service games but could not get the crucial break. The second set headed to a tie-break where Tsitsipas grabbed the early mini-break in the tie-break, which he went on to win 8-6.

Tsitsipas has booked a place in the Round of 16 for the first time in his career at a Masters 1000 event. The Greek will play former world number one and four-time champion Novak Djokovic in the next round.  The win means that Tsitsipas will climb to world number 25 in the ATP rankings.
