Tuesday meeting set to decide fate of weekend SLGR games

Following the attack on the home of Angelos Evangelou, who was working over the video assistant referee (VAR) system during the controversial Volos - Olympiacos match, all referees unanimously decided to abstain from Super League and Greek Cup games until a solution to the ongoing issue of aggression towards officials is sorted out.

However, despite their threat, the Super League organisation ordered that all games of the 17th round, which is set to be played between January 4-5, must be played on time:

“The Super League insists that the 17th round of the Super League championship must be conducted as scheduled, and that the Hellenic Football Federation (EPO) must undertake all necessary actions within its capabilities to ensure the smooth running of all matches.”

Referees had previously revealed that they plan on abstaining from all games until at least January 17.

Taking into account that the Super League is insisting that the 17th round must be played at the weekend, an emergency meeting has been called at the EPO’s offices for 11:00 on Tuesday morning, with the federation under severe pressure to persuade the referees to return to work. It is highly likely that Evangelos Grammenos, the president of the EPO, will be present at the meeting.

President of Asteras Tripolis, Giorgos Borovilos, expects that Super League matches will be played in accordance with the schedule: “My estimation is that we will have games at the weekend. Due to the seriousness of the matter, Grammenos will probably be at the meeting tomorrow. We all know what the referees want, but there are no specific demands in their documents. Their problems cannot be solved overnight.”

Planned schedule for round 17 of the 2019/2020 Super League:

January 4

OFI - Volos NFC
Aris - PAOK
Atromitos - Asteras Tripolis

January 5

AEK - Panetolikos
Xanthi - AE Larissa
Panionios - Lamia
Olympiacos - Panathinaikos
