Last week, as a result of the coronavirus outbreak across the globe, both the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League were suspended by the continent’s football governing body. If medical experts are proven to be correct, the coronavirus will continue causing major disruption until at least May, meaning UEFA have extremely little time in which to complete the 2019/2020 club campaign. UEFA Euro 2020 is widely expected to be postponed to either December or the summer of 2021.

Both the Champions League and Europa League are at the Round of 16 stage. Olympiacos, the last remaining Hellenic representative in Europe, drew the first round of the Last 16 tie against Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Europa League 1-1 at the Karaiskakis Stadium on Thursday. In the early stages of the second half, Youssef El Arabi opened the scoring for 10-man Olympiacos, before Wolves got back on level terms through a deflected free-kick from Pedro Neto. The second leg was originally due to be played on March 21st.

UEFA is contemplating holding a Final Four tournament, in Turkey for the Champions League and in Gdansk for the Europa League, in order to quickly complete the two competitions. The format would be the same which the EuroLeague uses for its Final Four tournament in basketball.

The Final Four of the Champions League and Europa League would be held over a four-day period.

In addition, UEFA could introduce a one-off tie format for the remaining rounds of the two tournaments, with either a neutral venue being used or a draw taking place to decide the host of the game.

Nevertheless, there is still the faint possibility of Euro 2020 being played as scheduled this summer, with Russia offering to host the entire competition. The Russian Federation has barely been affected by the coronavirus with less than 100 registered cases.
