UEFA postpones finals of club competitions 

The finals of the Champions League and Europa League have been postponed, UEFA has confirmed.

On Monday evening, UEFA released this following statement:

“As a result of the COVID-19 crisis in Europe, UEFA has today formally taken the decision to postpone the following matches, originally scheduled for May 2020:

“- UEFA Women’s Champions League Final

“- UEFA Europa League Final

“- UEFA Champions League Final

“No decision has yet been made on rearranged dates. The working group, established last week as a result of the conference call among the stakeholders of European football, which was chaired by UEFA President, Aleksander Čeferin, will analyse the options available. The group has already begun its examination of the calendar. Announcements will be made in due course.”

UEFA had already confirmed that all knockout games of both the Champions League and Europa League are indefinitely suspended.

Olympiacos, the Super League leaders, are involved in the UEFA Europa League Round of 16 after dropping down from the UEFA Champions League last year. In early March, Olympiacos were held to a 1-1 draw in Piraeus against Wolverhampton Wanderers in the first leg of their Last 32 tie, however it is not yet known when the second match in England will take place. 

The devastating coronavirus pandemic has halted the vast majority of sporting leagues across Europe. 

UEFA president, Aleksander Ceferin, had previously stated his goal of completing all domestic league seasons. 

It has also been suggested that UEFA is considering the usage of a Final Four format for the decisive games of the Champions League and Europa League tournaments.
