VAR not expected to be ready for start of new season

It was expected that the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system would be in place for the start of the 2019/2020 Super League season, but it’s now highly unlikely that will happen.

In May, VAR made its debut at the top level of Hellenic football, as the technology was used for the Greek Cup final between PAOK and AEK at the Olympic Stadium in Athens. Many hoped that VAR would be fully rolled out among Super League grounds for the 2019/2020 season, but if recent reports are to be believed, the system won’t be ready for the beginning of the campaign.

According to information supplied by Live Sport, it could take between four-five months to install the optical fibre equipment in all Super League arenas, meaning that the 2019/2020 campaign begins without VAR technology in use. Live Sport stated that there is only a 5% chance that VAR will be in place when the new season starts in August.

A contract was signed in May confirming that VAR will be used in the 2019/2020 Super League.
