You know a player is talented if he plays at Real Madrid. Playing on the right wing, Vassilakis has been making steady progress with the Spanish giants since transferring from Alboraya in the summer of 2017, with the 19-year-old having earned an opportunity with the under 19 side during the current campaign. Vassilakis was handed a nine-minute cameo in the UEFA Youth League last October in a 1-0 victory at Galatasaray.

Born in Spain, Vassilakis does hold both Greek and Spanish citizenship, meaning he is eligible to represent Greece at international level. Nevertheless, despite the fact that he’s on Real Madrid’s books, the teenage winger is still yet to even play for the Greeks at youth level. He’s never been called up by Spain either.

Of course, assuming Vassilakis subsequently takes the step to the next level as a senior professional, more emphasis will be put on a possible call-up to the Greek national team. Interestingly, when giving a recent interview to Nova, John van ‘t Schip stated that Vassilakis ‘needs to prove himself at a more competitive level’ before there can be any talk of the youngster being summoned to the Ethniki Omada. Van ‘t Schip has been widely praised for introducing new blood to the national team since replacing Angelos Anastasiadis as head coach last year.

Van ‘t Schip is certainly right not to include Vassilakis in his plans as yet. Although Vassilakis boasts bags of potential, he is yet to participate in a single match at senior level, and the huge competition at Real Madrid will make it difficult for him to ever play for the first team. Vassilakis is a quick, energetic winger on the right flank, causing problems for the opponents with his electric pace and eye for goal. It’s worth noting that he registered 20 goals for Real in the Juvenil C in the 2017/2018 season.

The most important thing for Vassilakis is to make the correct decision concerning his imminent progression from youth to senior football. If he manages to prove himself as a professional, it’s surely only a matter of time before the Hellenic Football Federation (EPO) introduces him to the international scene, whether it be with the under 21 side or the main national team. EPO scouts are closely tracking his development in Spain with Real.
