The event was originally scheduled for March 13-15, but World Athletics announced on Wednesday that the event will now take place in March 2021, with the exact dates to be confirmed in the near future. Greece’s Katerina Stefanidi, who won bronze medals at each of the last two World Indoor Championships, had already announced that she would not be competing at all during the 2020 indoor season in order to focus on the outdoor season with the 2020 Olympics coming up. On the other hand, other Greek athletes such as Nikoleta Kyriakopoulou, Paraskevi Papachristou, and Miltiadis Tentoglou were expected to contend for medals in Nanjing, but will now have to wait until next year.

The postponement of this year’s event means that March 2021 will see both the European Indoor Championships (in Torun, Poland) and the World Indoor Championships in Nanjing. The World Indoor Championships, which usually take place every two years, will now take a three-year break (after last being held in 2018) and then be held two years in a row, as Belgrade, Serbia is set to host the 2022 World Indoor Championships. It is expected that there will be a two-week gap between next year’s European Indoor Championships and World Indoor Championships in order to give athletes the chance to compete at both.
