The two players had previously met once before, with Sakkari winning back in 2017 at the Wuhan Open. They did also play once in 2015 at the Fed Cup, where the Dane came out on top, though that match does not count officially. Wozniacki, the 2011 champion at this event, got off to a perfect start as she went up 4-0 early on in the first set. The world number 13 would ultimately take the set by a score of 6-2.

In the second set, Sakkari got an early break and went up 2-0. However, Wozniacki would win six consecutive games to take the match 6-2 6-2 and advance to the semifinals. She will now face Croatia’s Petra Martic for a spot in the final.

Despite the loss, Sakkari is still set to move up from her current ranking of 50, to either 44 or 45 (depending on other results). She gained an important 100 points by reaching the quarterfinals here, as she moves closer to the top 32, which would guarantee being seeded at the Grand Slams.
