Before this match, Xanthi had made somewhat of a disappointing start to the playouts by losing against Volos NFC and drawing with Panetolikos, but they notched their maiden victory on Wednesday by defeating Atromitos. As a result of their win, Xanthi are now up to sixth in the playout table with 22 points, one above Panetolikos. Atromitos occupy second spot with 34 points on the board.

Originally, this game was due to be played on matchday one of the relegation playouts, but it was suspended as a consequence of coronavirus concerns in the Xanthi region.

Following an uneventful first half of play, Xanthi began to take the initiative in the second stanza, with Thibault Moulin curling a sumptuous free kick inches wide of the left post.

Nevertheless, with 13 minutes remaining on the clock, Xanthi did score their winning goal.

Receiving a clever pass on the right wing, Jean Barrientos took aim with a rasping shot, catching Christos Mandas cold as the Atromitos goalkeeper contrived to palm the ball into his own net.

As the game progressed, Atromitos did try to force the issue, but Xanthi saw the match out with little fuss.

At the weekend, Xanthi will face Panionios in Nea Smyrni, while Atromitos will take on AE Larissa in Peristeri.
