Dissecting England’s Chances at Euro 2021

Dissecting England’s Chances at Euro 2021

With Euro 2020 just around the corner, England is looking to win their first major international tournament since their victory in the 1966 World Cup. Gareth Southgate’s squad pretty much floated through qualifiers, netting 37 goals and winning seven out of their eight games to secure their place in the finals. England will fancy their chances with such an exuberance of talent but it is doubtful that England will have an easy time of it.

They face both Croatia and the Czech Republic in Group D, two teams who they have struggled against in recent years. But they can take some comfort in the fact that the semi-finals and finals will be hosted at Wembley Stadium. To see how the U21 Greek Euro 2020 squad lines up, read here.

Southgate has primarily employed the 3-4-3 formation in most recent international fixtures, and he’s likely to stick with this formation. The only question now is what squad will he field on the day. With only 23 spaces available on the squad for Euro 2020, players have only a few months left to impress and get their names on the team sheet.

The Battle Between the Sticks

England will most definitely start with Jordan Pickford, who has established himself as the Three Lions number one after impressive displays at the 2018 World Cup. Jordan Pickford looks sure to start for the Three Lions after establishing himself as England’s number one after a series of impressive displays at the 2018 World Cup.

The alternate choices to Pickford will probably be Burnley’s Nick Pope and United’s Dead Henderson, and though Pope looks to be higher in the hierarchy, Henderson’s performances for United could see him climb above Pope in the pecking order.

Who Will Be a Part of England’s Backline?

All were expecting Trent Alexander-Arnold to start at the back, after his praiseworthy performance at Liverpool to help them finally win the UEFA Champions League after 14 years, and who can forget the piece of genius that was his crafty corner against Barcelona to secure Liverpool an aggregate 4-3 victory.

However, his position on the squad isn’t assured, as Southgate decided to drop Alexander-Arnold from the England squad during the qualifiers. As someone who has a very strong claim to being the best English right-back in the country, the fact that he was snubbed during the qualifiers turned a lot of heads. Even England’s ex-skipper Steven Gerrard had a thing or two to say about this decision

The one certainty at the back is the imposing and reliable Manchester United captain Harry Maguire, but his centre-back partners remain subject to change, though Manchester City's Kyle Walker should make the final cut, as Southgate will look to capitalise on his experience.

And the Rest?

The Lion’s midfield core will revolve around the likes of Jordan Henderson, Declan Rice (who has established himself as one of England’s best holding midfielders), and Mason Mount (looking to link up play at the front as an attacking midfielder). England’s forwards are pretty much clear cut, with the ever-dependable Harry Kane leading the line alongside Marcus Rashford, Jordan Sancho, and Raheem Sterling.
