Five Top Greek Players Currently Playing Abroad

The Greek Super League is highly popular domestically and abroad. It is a league that features the top Greek teams squaring off, but not all of the best Greek players in the world play in the Super League. In fact, most of the top Greeks are competing in other leagues around the world. These include Greeks competing in some of the biggest clubs on the planet, whose games are watched by sports betting Ontario enthusiasts, English fans, and soccer lovers on every corner of the globe.

Let’s look at some of the incredible Greek talent that is currently playing in leagues outside of Greece. Below are five incredible players currently performing abroad.

Odysseas Vlachodimos

Odysseas Vlachodimos is one of the top Greek goaltenders of all time, a high-end talent who has performed incredibly in domestic competitions. He got his start at VfB Stuttgart, where he played in the Bundesliga at a young age. He then returned to his roots, becoming the starting goaltender for Panathinaikos in the Super League. However, he is now competing at Benfica, where he is one of the top goaltenders in Portugal and has led his team to great heights. He remains entrenched as Benfica’s best keeper at 29, and he is coming off a Primeira League victory with the club. He also has made 31 national appearances with Greece.

Konstantinos Mavropanos

Konstantinos Mavropanos is a stalwart center-back that is currently playing for VfB Stuttgart in the Bundesliga. He is one of their top players, and at 25, the story of his soccer career is far from written. Mavropanos got his start at PAS Giannina before being signed by Arsenal. He only made seven appearances with Arsenal during his time with the team but played well when given the opportunity. He then caught on with VfB Stuttgart after playing in the 2.Bundesliga, and is now a regular part of the squad. He has scored six goals in two seasons for the squad and is a capable defender.

Vangelis Pavlidis

Vangelis Pavlidis is one of the players who has performed best in the league he has played in. The Greek centre-forward struggled to find a home for much of his career, bouncing from the Borussia Dortmund reserve team to the second division of Dutch football. But once he got an opportunity for AZ Alkmaar at the highest level of the Dutch league, he took off. In two domestic seasons with the club, he has scored 30 goals in just 62 games. He is a talented forward who is only 24 years old. There are rumors he could end up in the Bundesliga or Premier League.

Konstantinos Tsimikas

Konstantinos Tsimikas is a Greek who is currently competing in the Premier League for Liverpool. A sturdy, competitive left-back, the 27-year-old Tsimikas is now one of the top Greek players on the planet. He played much of his career at Olympiacos in the Super League before signing with Liverpool. He has consistently been a part of Jurgen Klopp's lineups and has made 35 domestic appearances for the club. He scored the winning penalty for Liverpool in the FA Cup final and also had two assists in a Champions League quarter-final against Benfica.

Taxiarchis Fountas

While Major League Soccer, or MLS, is not the most highly regarded league, it is great to see Taxiarchis Fountas perform well there. Fountas has bounced around, with spells at AEK Athens, RB Salzburg, and loans all around the world. He is now a high-level forward for the MLS club D.C United. In just 33 domestic appearances for the team, he has scored 16 goals and is considered one of their top players.
