Most Expensive Greek Footballers in History

Football transfers are always the talk of the moment, whenever the next transfer season comes upon us. Transfers throughout history have really taken recognition within the football community, for their large deals and great amounts of money being put towards players. Greek football clubs and players know of this idea very well, and it has become very common that each and every year, the amount equates to far greater than the last year. It's constantly escalating.

When it comes to football transfers, it is always called upon football fans to have their own bit of fun each and every season. You can get involved and predict who you think will be the next big money transfer. By taking a look at this list of free bets, and have a punt risk-free, because why ever not?

Below we have listed each and every player in Greek history that has managed to get headlines for being super expensive. The players listed go back to over the last seven years of transfers, meaning it is pretty recent and has definitely got sports fans talking in the past.

Kostas Mitroglou

Kostas Mitroglou’s transfer from Benfica to Marseille is noted down as one of the most expensive transfers within Greek player history to date. This transfer from Benfica to the French club, was set for four years back in 2017, and it had a mighty price tag of €15 million, with an additional compensation of 12.5 if he cannot be sold again after two years. Within the debut he made within Ligue 1, Kostas unfortunately had an injury which really did restrict his playing time massively. He only managed to make 19 appearances all together. Yet within those appearances he was very on target, with 9 times out of 19. Meaning it was not a complete flat line in his career within the Ligue 1...just bad timing sadly. It happens, right?

Sokratis Papastathopoulos

Sokratis was a player that had defensive talent, and yes Greek too! Many will remember his transfer to Arsenal in 2018, for €16 million, and an additional €3 million compensation fees. Being a highly talented and experienced player, Sokratis had been playing with the likes of teams such as Genoa, AC Milan, Werder Bremen and Borussia Dortmund. His career was at the peak and top. However, after being with Arsenal for a number of years, he has now returned back to Athens to play locally there.

Panagiotis Retsos

Retsos was 19 years old when he was transferred to Bayer Leverkusen. The transfer topped €17.5 million, alongside additional payment for selected services from team to team. Retsos was a player that certainly did not disappoint at all too by the way, he in fact managed to score at multiple fixtures for the Bundesliga. In addition to scoring a maiden goal which put him on the maps for his career. Even at the very end of the campaign, the fans had kept their loyalty to Retsos, and voted him towards the team of the season's gameplay time.

Kostas Mitroglou

Kostas moved towards Fulham back in 2014, from Olympiacos. This move cost a total of €15.2 million it is believed, yet many believed this to be a mistake. The reason being was that Fulham had topped the record of transfer spends for themselves at the time, and it was shown that Mitroglou actually didn't manage to make something of his time within England. In fact, within the entire time he played for the Premiership League, he failed to score even once, which many believe was one of the reasons Fulham suffered relegation later on. During that same year, Mitroglou actually managed to get back to Olympiacos on loan within the following August, showing us that sometimes it just does not always work out unfortunately.

Kostas Manolas

The final player to add to our list, stars Kostas Manolas, who moved from Olympiacos to AS Roma, back in the year 2014. It was there and then that Kostas generated hype and popularity within teams, as he managed to score a winning goal against Barcelona, back during the UEFA Champions league quarter final. Manolas certainly gave Roma their money's worth, as he has been seen as a nightmare of an opponent, and a key forward player. He is also much valued within the national Greek football team too.
