The Best Greek Football Players Ever

It is safe to say that soccer is one of the most popular sports in the world. If people in the United States love their American Football and search for the best NFL Week 3 odds, then the Europeans simply can't live without soccer. The case is the same with Greeks.

Now, you would think that Greeks don't have a lot to offer when it comes to modern soccer, but you would be wrong. Sure, they don't have the best league in Europe, but they blessed us with some rather talented players in the past 20 years.

Today we are going to discuss the best Greek soccer players in history.

Giorgos Karagounis?

Georgios Karagkounis, known as Giorgos Karagounis, is a former Greek professional footballer who played as a midfielder.

He had a rich club career, as he played for Panathinaikos, Apollon Smyrnis, Inter Milan, Benfica, and Fulham.

But, it is safe to say that Karagounis had a better career on the international level. As you know, Karagounis represented Greece between 1999 and 2014. His biggest success happened back in 2004 when he was a member of the UEFA Euro 2004-winning squad. He also represented Greece at UEFA Euro 2008, the 2010 FIFA World Cup, Euro 2012, and the 2014 World Cup. With 139 appearances, he is the most capped player in the history of the Greece national team.

He is a legend of Greek football.

Angelos Charisteas

Angelos Charisteas is a Greek former professional footballer who played as a forward. Back in the day, he was a Greek god who scored some of the most important goals in the history of the Greek national team. Today, he works as sporting director for Aris Thessaloniki.

At club level he played for Aris Thessaloniki, Werder Bremen, Ajax, Feyenoord, Bayer Leverkusen, Schalke 04, Arles-Avignon, and Al-Nassr.

Internationally, he played 88 games for Greece and scored 25 goals. He also was a member of the UEFA Euro 2004 winning team, scoring three goals, including the winning goal in the final against Portugal. It is safe to say that was the most important moment of his career.

Theodoros Zagorakis

Sure, Theodoros Zagorakis may not be the most gifted player to watch on this list, but every true football enthusiast from Greece will tell you that he was one of the most important players in the recent history of this nation. He also won the 2004 European Championship with Greece, and he was the heart and soul of that team. If there ever was a player ready to die for the badge, that was Theodoros Zagorakis. That is why he deserves a place on our list of best Greek players of all time.

FIFA World Cup is just months away, and we simply had to reminisce a bit and celebrate the three Greek gods of football. Sure, Greece has many outstanding football players, now and in the past, but today we decided to discuss the three most important ones. The three heroes we discussed today were responsible for the best underdog story in the history of international football.
