The Best Greek Teams Performance in the Champions League

The Champions League is the pinnacle of European soccer. It is where the top teams from every major nation on the continent square off in a tournament where only one can emerge victorious, cementing themselves as the best domestic team in Europe. It is a bonanza on soccer betting sites and one of the most-watched sporting events of every year.

Greek teams have often made appearances at the Champions League, although they struggle against the bigger budget clubs. However, there are some historical teams that have showcased incredible results in this tournament, exceeding all expectations and making Greece proud. Let’s look at the clubs that have had the strongest showings in the Champions League across Greek history.

Panathinaikos 95/96

Panathinaikos is an Athens-based club that is one of the most popular teams in Greece. Panathinaikos had the best-ever performance by a Greek team in a Champions League, romping all the way to the semi-finals of the tournament. They finished atop their group, which included major clubs like Nantes and Porto. Panathinaikos proceeded to the quarter-final, as the tournament was smaller back then. They drew Legia Warsaw, who they beat 3-0 on aggregate. They finished their run in the semi-final, where an Ajax team that was stacked with talent would win 3-1 on aggregate.

Olympiacos 98/99

Olympiacos is Panathinaikos’ heated rival, a Piraeus-based Athenian club that is the most successful in Greek history. Their crowning Champions League achievement came in 1998/99 when they made it through to the quarter-finals. They finished first in a group that included Ajax and Porto, while Panathinaikos finished last in their group. Unfortunately, in the quarter-finals, Olympiacos went up against the talented Juventus squad. They would lose 3-2 on aggregate, which is still an excellent showing for the team.

Panathinaikos 2001/02

By this season, the Champions League had grown to resemble what it is today, with a considerable number of clubs from across European competition. That makes Panathinaikos' run to the quarter-finals here a remarkable achievement. Panathinaikos was playing in a difficult group featuring Arsenal, Mallorca, and Schalke 04, three teams from top-flight leagues. But Panathinaikos ended up finishing on top of their group and moving into the second group stage. They finished second in their group behind Real Madrid and ahead of Porto and Sparta Prague. They drew Barcelona in the quarter-finals and managed to perform well. They lost 3-2 on aggregate, but they showed they could compete against top European clubs.

Olympiacos 2009/10

By this year, the Champions League was very similar to the current iteration. Olympiacos managed to qualify, while Panathinaikos lost in a playoff to make the final league. Olympiacos had a challenging draw, with Arsenal, AZ Alkmaar, and Standard Liege in their group. But they prevailed in the group stage, finishing second behind Arsenal, and proceeded into the knockout round. There, they drew Bordeaux, who prevailed against them 3-1 on aggregate. While it was not the most prolonged stay in the Champions League, they acquitted themselves well against teams from the top divisions in Europe.

Panathinaikos 2008/09

Panathinaikos managed to qualify for the tournament the hard way, beating Dinamo Tbilisi and Sparta Prague to earn their way into the tournament. They drew a relatively weak group, with Anorthosis, a Cyprus side, Werder Breman, and the immensely talented Inter Milan. They managed to finish atop the group to earn entry into the knockout round. The dream would die there in a hard-fought battle against Villareal. Panathinaikos would lose 3-2 on aggregate but impressed fans and experts with their passionate play and ability to compete on soccer's biggest stage.
