-- EXPLANATION OF SUPER LEAGUE STANDINGS --

standings & calculation

The Greek Super League standings are calculated based off a points system used across the soccer world. Three points are awarded for a win, one point for a draw, and zero points for a loss.

The team with the most points at the conclusion of the Super League season (30 fixtures) is considered the Champion. The bottom three are relegated to the Super League 2, the second division, while the top team from the Football League (the 2018/19 second tier) is promoted to the Super League. The 13th placed team will play the Football League’s runner-up in a two-legged playoff for a spot in the 2019/20 Super League.

tie breakers

If two or more teams are equal on points, the following criteria are applied to determine the rankings:

  1. Higher number of points obtained in the league matches played between the teams in question (i.e. head to head results)

  2. Superior goal difference from the league matches played between the teams in question (i.e. head to head goal difference)

  3. Higher number of goals scored (goals forced) from the league matches played between the teams in question (i.e. head to head goals scored)

  4. Superior goal difference from ALL the league matches played (i.e. overall goal difference)

  5. Higher number of goals scored from ALL the league matches played (i.e. overall goals forced)

  6. Lowest number of goals conceded from ALL the league matches played (i.e. overall goal conceded)
