Chalobah 63'

The Greek U19 National Soccer Team advanced to the next qualifying round for Euro 2017, despite falling to England 0-2 in today’s final group 6 fixture. The Greek team finished 2nd in the group, behind England, and will continue on to the Elite Qualifying Round.

Good news came out of group 7 before Greece’s fixture against England after Italy and Switzerland played to a draw, which mathematically secured Greece’s place in the next qualifying round. Greece, who had 6 points from their first 2 games in group 6, were guaranteed to finish at minimum as the best 3rd placed team from all the groups (after Italy and Switzerland drew) which meant they would progress to the next round of qualifying regardless of today’s result.

England opened the scoring in the 20th minute with Arnold’s penalty and Greece had good opportunities to pull level with Limnios and Mingos, but were unable to do so. England secured all 3-points midway through the second half when Chalobah doubled England’s lead. The English held onto their 2-0 victory and jumped ahead of Greece to top group 6. Greece finished 2nd in group 6 and will join England in the next qualifying round, which is known as the Elite Qualifying Round. Wales, who thrashed Luxembourg 6-2 and claimed 3rd place, finished on 6 points along with England and Greece, but missed out on a spot in the next round due to their goal differential. They ranked as the 2nd best 3rd place team and were eliminated from the competition.

The Elite Qualifying Round, which consists of 28 teams, will be held in March 2017 where Greece will look to progress to the Euro 2017 Finals.
