After a thrilling match in Turkey, Panathinaikos fell 91-83 in double overtime against Anadolu Efes for the 5th round of the Euroleague Season. In the first overtime, KC Rivers’ shot at the buzzer sent the game into the second overtime, but it was not enough as Panathinaikos moved to 3-2 in this year’s Euroleague.

Panathinaikos was in control of the game in the opening half and took a 7-point lead into halftime. However, Anadolu Efes responded in the third quarter, going on an 11-0 run, bringing the game level before the fourth quarter. It was a thrilling match even up until the final seconds of regulation, with the score tied at 70-70, as both teams missed shots to win the game (Nichols for Panathinaikos with 5 seconds remaining) and the match went into overtime.

In the first overtime, it looked as if Anadolu Efes would come away with the win, but with the Turkish club ahead 77-75, KC Rivers’ shot at the buzzer sent the game to a second overtime. In the second overtime period, the Trifylli showed signs of fatigue and trailed by as many as 9-points (86-77) and Efes went on to win 91-83 in a very entertaining match at the Abdi İpekçi Arena.

KC Rivers was the leading scorer for Panathinaikos with 15 points, while Pappas followed with 13 points. Gist added 12 points with 11 rebounds and Nichols scored 11-points, but was unable to provide the winning basket at the end of regulation. Calathes led Panathinaikos with 12 assists while putting up 10 points. Thomas Huertel was the leading scorer for Efes with 17 points.

Panathinaikos now moves to 3-2 in this year’s Euroleague season and Xavi Pascual was handed his first defeat as the new Panathinaikos boss. Anadolu Efes goes to 2-3 before next week’s match on the road against Armani Milano while Panathinaikos hosts Maccabi Tel-Aviv.
