UEFA EUROPA LEAGUE - GROUP STAGE (GROUP B)

Young Boys 0 - 1 Olympiacos
Cambiassso 41'

Olympiacos got off to a great start in this year’s Europa League Group Stage with a 0-1 away win to Young Boys. The only goal of the game came late in the first half with Olympiacos’ best player of the match, Esteban Cambiasso.

The first half was played at a slow pace with Young Boys seeing more of the ball. The hosts had a couple of shots in the opening 20 minutes, without troubling Leali (started ahead of Kapino). Olympiacos was not a threat in the first half hour as Elyounoussi created Olympiacos’ first chance on goal after 32 minutes of play. Although the first half was heading for a goalless draw, the Erythrolefki found the breakthrough 4 minutes before halftime. A chipped pass from Cambiasso was headed on by Marin to Ideye, who played the ball across the goal giving Cambiasso the final touch to open the score for Olympiacos. Cambiasso’s first ever goal in the Europa League gave Olympiacos the 0-1 lead into the break.

Olympiacos came close to doubling their lead at the start of the second half but Seba could not turn Marin’s cross into a goal with Mvogo grabbing the ball before it crossed the line. Young Boys’ best chance of the half came in the 60th minute with Leali making a great double save to deny the hosts. Since neither team created a classic opportunity to score in the final 30 minutes, Olympiacos was left to celebrate an important away win to start off this year’s Europa League campaign.

Today’s result not only gives Olympiacos all three points, but will also be another confidence booster after their horrific summer in Europe. The recent good results (at Arouca, v Arouca in overtime, v Veria) show that Olympiacos are getting the results they need while slowly finding their form under Paulo Bento.

In other group match, APOEL defeated Astana 2-1 and joined Olympiacos on 3 points in Group B. Olympiacos will host APOEL in two weeks while Young Boys will travel to Astana.
