As previously reported on AGONAsport, the Super League organisation had already stated its desire for 3D hawk-eye technology to be introduced, and it now seems that it will make its debut in Greece during the upcoming championship playoffs. The Super League is aiming to have the system in place for the maiden games of the playoffs which will take place next weekend.

However, given the fact that the Super League playoffs are set to begin on March 7th, it is rather unlikely that all referees will receive the required training in order to use the hawk-eye technology competently. It will also be used for the second leg of the semi-finals and the final of the Greek Cup.

The extra technology will allow for officials to make more accurate offside decisions. A similar system is being used in the English Premier League.

Medialuso-Indigital will reportedly take care of the project. Technology for the offside line will cost around 950 euros per game.

The video assistant referee (VAR) system has been in full use in the Super League since the 2019/2020 campaign began. However, there have been several scandals involving VAR mistakes this season, with Petros Mantalos’ disallowed goal in the AEK - PAOK match and Hillal Soudani’s marker during the Volos NFC - Olympiacos game having caused plenty of controversy.
