The Kitrinomavri have eventually left the OAKA Indoor Hall. After months of waiting, the move to the Ano Liosia Olympic Hall was successfully completed on Monday, with the club formalising the deal with a presentation at the stadium:

AEK are aiming to increase the venue’s capacity to 10,000 before the 2020/2021 season begins.

Previously, AEK had been competing at the large OAKA since 2014, sharing the stadium with Athenian rivals Panathinaikos. Nevertheless, after a successful period at the arena which included winning the Basketball Champions League in Athens two years ago, the management took the decision to move permanently to Ano Liosia. The project between AEK and the Municipality of Fyli had been presented in April 2019.

“Today is an historic day for us,” stated AEK president Makis Angelopoulos. “The queen, AEK, enters her palace. AEK has acquired a worthy home. I would like to thank Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis for fulfilling his promise, and Deputy Minister of Culture and Sport Lefteris Avgenakis for his actions. I thank the mayor of Fyli, Christos Pappou, for supporting us. AEK will support the Fyli 2021 project. We have our home and we will begin work.”

The Ano Liosia Olympic Hall was built in the lead-up to the 2004 Olympic Games with an estimated cost of €84 million. The venue staged judo and wrestling events during the Olympics and has since hosted an array of events.
