AEK concede first UEL defeat in 13 matches

For the first time in 13 matches, AEK conceded a defeat in the UEFA Europa League, while the club’s home struggles in Europe continued.

Yesterday, AEK suffered a painful at the Olympic Stadium, as Trabzonspor responded to an early goal from Marko Livaja to stun the Greeks 3:1 with Caleb Ekuban scoring a memorable hat trick. AEK now have to score at least three goals in Turkey next week to stand a chance of qualifying for the group phase.

This was AEK’s maiden defeat in 13 Europa League matches. Here is the list of the 12 successive games in the competition in which AEK had avoided losing (W3, D9):

However, while AEK had long avoided losing in the Europa League, the Athenians have consistently underperformed at the OAKA.

Usually, Greek clubs are famed for performing well at home, but AEK struggle to play at their best at the OAKA. In their last 13 home matches in UEFA competitions, AEK have only gained a mere two victories, while picking up six draws and conceding five defeats:
