Following the news of Olympiacos’ points deduction for last week’s forfeited Eternal Derby clash with Panathinaikos, Matchday 20 in the Greek Basket League offered an extra bit of excitement as teams continued to jostle for a playoff spot.

AEK, who took Olympiacos’ spot in second place, continued their winning run in the Basket League with a dominant performance in Lemnos. Meanwhile, Peristeri were handed a rude awakening by a Lavrio side not willing to give up their pursuit of a playoff spot.

IFAISTOS LIMNOU 74-87 AEK

AEK stretched their domestic win streak to five games as the Enosi used an improved second half performance to snap Ifaistos’ three-game winning streak.

After a tight first half which saw AEK grab a narrow 38-39 lead, the Athenians began to pull away in the third quarter thanks to a 16-24 stretch.

Vince Hunter led the way for AEK with 21 points and 6 rebounds while Ifaistos’ Sean Evans put on a similar performance with 20 points and 7 boards in the defeat.

HOLARGOS 66-61 RETHYMNO CRETAN KINGS

Holargos used a rapid-fire start to the first quarter to hand Rethymno their league-worst 17th defeat of the season.

A 22-9 from the home side set Holargos on their way with Vladimir Jankovic’s 17 points playing a pivotal part in the promoted side’s success in the early going.

Despite some push back from Rethymno in the second quarter the Cretan Kings couldn’t muster much of a comeback in the second half as Holargos held on for their first win since 26 January.

LAVRIO 83-55 PERISTERI

Lavrio managed back-to-back wins for the first time this season thanks to a dominant performance against Peristeri.

A 24-15 run put Lavrio on track for a memorable night before the Metallorichoi extended their lead to double digits by halftime. Mchalis Lountzis led all Lavrio scorers with 15 points as each player on the home side’s roster managed to find the scoresheet in the win.

Peristeri, who were led by Steven Gray’s 14 points, struggled to keep up with Lavrio’s high-tempo offense as the visitors allowed their opponents to shoot close to 60% from the field.

KYMIS 86-82 PROMITHEAS

A 35-point, 13-rebound double-double form Octavius Ellis wasn’t enough to prevent Promitheas from avoiding defeat in Kymis as the Patras side collapsed in the fourth quarter to concede the contest.

A dominant 27-16 run in the fourth quarter helped Kymis overturn a late deficit and snap a three-game losing streak.

Chris Horton’s monster double-double (19 points, 15 rebounds) helped steer the Euboean outfit to a vital win that might ultimately preserve the club’s Basket League status for another season.
