The hosts had to come from behind to earn a thrilling victory, but they proved too strong for AEK at the Antonis Papadopoulos Stadium in Larnaca.

It was AEK who struck first inside three minutes. Following a poor mistake from Gordon Schildenfeld, the visitors swung the ball across the penalty area, where Joan Tomas was waiting to tap into the gaping net. AEK could have grabbed an instant second goal, but Florian Taulemesse’s fierce half-volley grazed the right post.

Anorthosis gradually increased the intensity, in turn creating plenty of scoring opportunities. Croatian defender Schildenfeld had a glorious chance to atone for his earlier error, heading wide at point blank range. Eventually, Anorthosis equalised after 52 minutes. Lurking in the box, Brazilian Joao Victor lashed his first time effort beyond the beaten AEK goalkeeper.

The game’s decisive moment arrived seventeen minutes before the final whistle. A clever pass found Anorthosis’ Vladimir Gadzev, who rounded the goalkeeper and slotted the ball into the empty net. Sekou Cisse added a third when clean through in the closing stages, sealing a huge 3:1 Anorthosis triumph.

Following this victory, Anorthosis overtake AEK to occupy first place in the Cypriot First Division. Both are level on 40 points. However, third placed APOEL Nicosia have two games in hand, while Apollon in fourth position have played three games less than Anorthosis.
