On Monday, newly-elected Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis formed his 51-member cabinet, with Lefteris Avgenakis receiving the role of the Deputy Minister of Culture and Sport. Avgenakis will serve as deputy to Lina Mendoni.

Spokesperson Stelios Petsas announced the changes on Monday afternoon.

Yesterday, Mitsotakis became the new Prime Minister of Greece, with New Democracy defeating SYRIZA in the national elections over the weekend. The much-criticised Alexis Tsipras steps down after four years at the helm.

Avgenakis, born on 18 July 1972, graduated from the University of Peloponnese after studying World Political Economy and International Relations. In Heraklion, he subsequently founded a business company in 2001 which is still running, and he got involved with the New Democracy political party in 2004. Avgenakis has also had political books published.

Since April 2016, he has been the Secretary of the Political Committee of the New Democracy group, with Avgenakis known to be a close associate of Mitsotakis.
