On Friday, Barkas suddenly became unwell, and the 25-year-old was subsequently taken to hospital with appendicitis. The AEK goalkeeper promptly underwent an operation to have his appendix removed.

AEK released this following statement:

“Vasilis Barkas successfully underwent surgery. The operation took place at the Athens Medical Centre by the Director of the Department of General, Laparoscopic, Bariatric and Robotic Surgery, Mr. Konstantinos Konstantinidis. The AEK family extends its warm wishes to the goalkeeper for a speedy recovery and a quick return to action!”

Barkas is now expected to miss the Super League regular season games against OFI and Panionios, the start of the championship playoffs and the first leg of the Greek Cup semi-final with Aris. He is also unlikely to play for the senior Greek national team in the upcoming friendly games against Mexico and Costa Rica.

The goalkeeper will sit on the sidelines for at least one month.

So far, Barkas has made 24 appearances for AEK across all competitions in the current campaign, conceding 19 goals and earning 12 clean sheets. AEK sit in third place of the Super League table with 47 points from 24 matches.
