On Friday evening, Carrera was pictured arriving at Athens International Airport around 21:30 local time:

Reports have suggested that Carrera will pen a contract with AEK to become their head coach until the completion of the 2020/2021 campaign.

Tomorrow, Carrera is expected to sign his paperwork with AEK, but the club won’t make an announcement before the upcoming Super League match against Panionios which is scheduled to take place on Saturday evening at the Olympic Stadium. Nikos Kostenoglou will still be at the helm for that particular game.

Carrera, 55, has been unemployed since October 2018 when he left Spartak Moscow. In 2017, the Italian ended Spartak’s 16-year wait to win the Russian Premier League title again, before he subsequently claimed the Super Cup with the capital club in the same year. Carrera also worked with Juventus and the Italian national team in the past.

Earlier in the week, Leonid Slutsky was AEK’s main target, but the Russian manager requested more time to make a decision. AEK technical director Ilija Ivic, not wanting to wait any longer, immediately closed the door and turned his attentions to Carrera.

AEK are currently languishing in fifth place of the Super League, trailing the leading pair of Olympiacos and PAOK by a large 10 points after 12 rounds.
