Carrera first Italian coach in AEK history

In joining the Athenian club, Massimo Carrera has become the first Italian manager in history to work as the AEK head coach.

The coaching merry-go-round is certainly in full swing at AEK. On Sunday, Carrera officially signed a 1.5 year contract with the Kitrinomavri, replacing Nikos Kostenoglou at the helm following a run of poor performances and underwhelming results. Kostenoglou, for his part, had replaced Miguel Cardoso as the AEK boss in late August after the Portuguese coach was hastily sacked having conceded avoidable defeats against Trabzonspor and Xanthi.

Carrera, 55, famously won the 2016/2017 Russian Premier League with Spartak Moscow to end the capital club’s 16-year title drought. He also worked in the coaching staff of Juventus and the senior Italian national team in the past.

Interestingly, Carrera has become the first Italian coach in history to be employed by AEK, but he is the 14th manager from Italy to work in the Super League. Here are all of the other 13 Italians who have worked in the top Greek tier:

Alberto Bigon (Olympiacos)

Gianluca Festa (AE Larissa)

Gennaro Gattuso (OFI)

Luigi Giuliano (Egaleo)

Vincenzo Guerini (Panachaiki)

Mario Malatesta (Ethnikos)

Alberto Malesani (Panathinaikos)

Amos Mariani (Korinthos, Kavala, Ethnikos)

Giuseppe Sannino (Levadiakos)

Andrea Stramaccioni (Panathinaikos)

Ettore Trevisan (Ethnikos, Niki Volou, Aris, Olympiacos Volou)

Bruno Vale (Olympiacos, Doxa Drama)

Giovanni Varlien (Veria)

Carrera will make his debut on the AEK bench on Saturday as the Enosis face Xanthi on the road in the Super League. AEK currently occupy third position of the standings with 21 points from 13 games.
