Initially, it seemed that Leonid Slutsky was on the verge of penning a deal with AEK, but all reports are now stating that Carrera will instead replace Nikos Kostenoglou as the head coach.

During their meeting earlier this week, AEK technical director Ilija Ivic gave Slutsky a deadline of Friday to make a final decision, but the Russian requested more time. Ivic, not wanting to wait any longer, immediately closed the door and turned his attentions to Carrera.

In the evening, Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio revealed that Carrera will arrive in Greece tomorrow to finalise his agreement with AEK:

Di Marzio also suggested that Carrera will pen a two-year contract with the Athens-based organisation.

Carrera, 55, has been unemployed since October 2018 when he left Spartak Moscow. In 2017, the Italian ended Spartak’s 16-year wait to win the Russian Premier League title again, before he subsequently claimed the Super Cup with the capital club in the same year. Carrera also worked with Juventus and the Italian national team in the past.

AEK are currently languishing in fifth place of the Super League, trailing the leading pair of Olympiacos and PAOK by a large 10 points after 12 rounds. Their next game will take place against Panionios at the Olympic Stadium on Saturday.
