The 2019-2020 Cyprus First Division season is over. By an 18-2 vote, 20 Cypriot clubs voted to call the season off after it was suspended two months ago, due to the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis that continues to ravage the entire world.

Though Omonoia were in first place at the time of the suspension and the end of the regular season, the Cyprus Football Association (KOP) declined to declare Omonoia as champions. Nonetheless, for UEFA purposes, Omonoia will be considered the Cypriot champions and as such, will be afforded the opportunity to attempt to qualify for the UEFA Champions League group stages, Europe’s top club competition. Omonoia owner, Stavros Papastavrou, suggested that he might appeal to the CFA to have Omonoia declared official champions of the 2019-2020 season.

The remaining top four teams, Anorthosis, APOEL, and Apollon Limassol, will enter qualifying for the UEFA Europa League.

Furthermore, the two teams that were in position to be relegated, Ethnikos Achnas and Doxa Katokopias, will not be relegated. Instead, the 2020-2021 season will be played with 14 teams. The top two teams in the Second Division are Karmiotissa and Ermis Aradippou, and they figure to join the top flight next season.

We will have more on this story as it develops.
