One of Olympiacos’ star performers this season has been Mady Camara. The 23-year-old has put forth a series of sparkling performances for the club in both league and continental play.

While the Guinean midfielder has featured in 39 matches this season in all competitions, it is since the turn of the year where he has really made his mark. Camara’s time at Olympiacos has been one where he has shown he is a player of real potential. However, for the most part, he has been mostly rated a decent, long-range shooter and a player whose performances are inconsistent.

That is no longer the case. Under the tutelage of manager Pedro Martins, Camara’s game has matured. Gone are the aimless runs with the ball, the useless shots from way too far out. Camara has become a true one-touch midfielder when needed combining that with an ability to hold the ball when it’s called for. Increasingly, the player has preferred to play a simpler style, and both the individual and club are reaping the benefits of this change.

The Guinean’s endurance and energy have always been a main strength, but now he has added more tactical sophistication and better decision-making to his game. This has greatly improved the player’s all-around game and has made him into one of the most important players in the current Olympiacos side.

Martins has seen the potential in Camara from the start. Since coming over to Greece from Ajaccio in France in July 2018, Camara tops the list of appearances (75 in total) for any player under Martins. The Portuguese manager has since been trying to unlock the full range of Camara’s potential, and that appears to be happening now.

With his impressive displays in Greece and the Europa League, Camara’s stock has grown tremendously. Before the disruption to the football calendar due to the Coronavirus, Camara was beginning to pop up on the radar of some of Europe’s big clubs. It remains to be seen where his future lies, however, if Camara can continue his upward trajectory, then a move abroad to an elite European side simply cannot be ruled out.
