With 53 minutes on the clock, Cisse escaped his marker inside the Arsenal penalty area to meet Mathieu Valbuena’s corner, and the Senegalese centre-back subsequently powered a thumping header beyond Bernd Leno to level the aggregate score. Olympiacos would eventually win 2-1 in extra time to dramatically defeat the Gunners and qualify for the Round of 16 of the Europa League.

Olympiacos will face Wolverhampton Wanderers in the next phase of the competition.

Cisse, 24, played the full 120 minutes in the centre of defence against Arsenal alongside Ousseynou Ba.

UEFA has subsequently included Cisse in the Europa League Team of the Week:

This was Cisse’s first European appearance since the UEFA Champions League qualifying rounds last summer. Cisse replaced the suspended Ruben Semedo in the second leg against Arsenal.
