Attendances in Greece’s top flight have long been spoken about over the years, primarily due to the constant sharp declines. Images of near-empty grounds can be seen across the country on any given weekend, as the images of packed crowds of yesteryear are nothing more than a distant memory.

According to ‘Transfermarkt’, Olympiacos lead the way in terms of attendance for this season and they also boast the highest percentage of their stadium being filled. Their average crowd to date sits at 23,771, meaning that the Georgios Karaiskakis stadium is 74% full as it holds a capacity of 32,115.

Reigning champions PAOK are second with an average attendance of 19,833 fans. This illustrates that Toumba is 69% full on average. Clearly, the size of the stadium affects this figure. For instance, AEK’s average attendance is currently 18,372, just behind PAOK. However, the difference is that OAKA is only 26.4% full as it boasts a capacity of 69,618. This will change as AEK are set to eventually move into their own stadium.

Worryingly, not only for the club but also the competition as a whole, Panathinaikos currently have an average attendance figure of 4,120 spectators. This means that OAKA is only 5.9% full. It gets worse for the likes of fellow Athenian clubs Panionios and Atromitos. The former have an average crowd of 1,831 loyal fans in a stadium with a capacity of 11,700, and the latter average just 1,300 in a stadium that holds 9,050 people.

These figures are in stark contrast with European heavyweights such as PSG, Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund, who all boast a rate of over 95% in terms of their respective venues being full at capacity.
