After losing to Zalgiris in a crucial duel at the Peace and Friendship Stadium in Round 29, Olympiacos’ EuroLeague fate was taken out of their hands, and the Lithuanians’ victory at Real Madrid yesterday officially ruled the Greeks out of the playoff race. Nevertheless, Olympiacos signed off the campaign on a positive note in Piraeus, cruising past Darussafaka with a high-scoring performance in the second half.

In what was a slow, uneventful match between two teams already out of contention, Olympiacos looked devoid of emotion in the first quarter and Darussafaka raced out into 28-20 lead after the hosts defended poorly.

At one point in the second quarter, Darussafaka boasted an 11-point advantage, but Olympiacos sprung back into action to win the frame 25-16 and lead 45-44 at half time.

The third quarter was where Olympiacos firmly took control of proceedings by outscoring their opponents 30-12. The tempo of the match didn’t ever reach maximum speed, but the Erythrolefki managed to gain offensive traction with Nigel Williams-Goss, Nikola Milutinov, Briante Weber and Zach Leday leading the charge. Williams-Goss was named the Most Valuable Player of the match with 18 points, six assists and four rebounds to his name.

Olympiacos, who gave Dimitris Agravanis (3 points) and 17-year-old prospect Aleksej Pokusevski (0 points) an opportunity, calmly saw out the game in the fourth stanza to run out 99-74 winners inside a sparsely attended Peace and Friendship Stadium.

The Piraeus organisation finish the 2018/2019 EuroLeague regular season in ninth position with a 15/15 record, missing out on the playoffs for the first time since the 2015/2016 campaign.
