According to reports from Livesport, ESAKE is looking to follow the example of Lithuania and Ukraine, who have already announced that their respective 2019/2020 domestic championships are over. If the story is to be believed, the organisation could announce the ending of the Basket League as early as Wednesday, with league leaders Panathinaikos being crowned champions. 20 rounds of the regular season were played before the coronavirus halted proceedings.

It had already been confirmed that the Basket League will not restart any earlier than March 30:

“Activities of the 2019/2020 EKO Basket League have been suspended until March 30, 2020.”

Panathinaikos, the reigning champions, are in top spot of the Basket League standings with 18 victories and two losses in the regular season. AEK and Peristeri complete the leading three positions.

However, when speaking to the press, ESAKE president Vangelis Galatsopoulos stated that no final decision has yet been made: “We are experiencing a pandemic, so the Board of Directors decided to suspend play in the Basket League until March 30. We will see what we can do based on the developments. No hasty decisions should be made, we’re speaking to the team owners, FIBA and the Ministry of Sport. The correct decisions need to be made. Our first concern is human life.”

The EuroLeague, EuroCup and Basketball Champions League have all been suspended until at least April 11.
