As a result of the coronavirus pandemic, which is continuing to cause devastation across the world with medical services struggling to keep up, competitive football in the vast majority of countries is suspended. UEFA Euro 2020 was recently postponed until 2021, with the club campaign expected to eventually be completed by July or even August.

On Tuesday, The Telegraph stated that FIFA is set to engage in conversations with teams with regard to keeping the upcoming summer transfer period open until January 2021, a plan which would help ease the financial impact of the crisis. Clubs and players will lose large amounts of money as a consequence of the coronavirus disaster.

This proposal by FIFA will soon be discussed with clubs and the FIFPro organisation.

It is predicted that the start of the 2020/2021 season will be delayed with the current campaign on track to finish several months later than originally planned.

Moreover, FIFA president, Gianni Infantino, has suggested that there could be fewer tournaments and games played in the near future: “We are looking at all options on the table. Let’s look at different formats for competitions, maybe we will have fewer of them and less matches to protect the health of players. However, at the same time, we won’t lose the level of competition,” said the 50-year-old when speaking to Gazzetta dello Sport.

Nearly all leagues across Europe stopped during the first half of March. At the start of the month, Evangelos Marinakis revealed that he had contracted the coronavirus, however the Olympiacos supremo has now made a full recovery.
