As a result of the coronavirus pandemic, nearly all European leagues have been suspended across the continent, with only the Belarusian Premier League still continuing. With the spread of the virus yet to drastically subside, there has been increased talk of the 2019/2020 season eventually being permanently cancelled, a possibility which was recently discussed during a meeting between representatives of Super League clubs in Greece.

However, in an attempt to prevent league seasons from being put to a premature end, FIFA has reportedly decided to indefinitely extend the campaign. The Athletic released the report on Monday.

The organisation would also change the dates of the summer transfer window and permit extensions for player contracts which are due to expire in late June. Each separate national federation will subsequently be able to determine when the season can successfully be completed.

Previous reports have suggested that the finals of the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League are to be scheduled for August.

UEFA president, Aleksander Ceferin, had already warned of possible exclusions from continental competitions if individual federations decide to end the season for good.
