First AEK appeal rejected, club take matter to CAS

After receiving a three-point deduction for fan behaviour in a Super League match against Olympiacos at home, AEK Athens submitted their first appeal protesting the decision, however it’s proven unsuccessful.

Watch LIVE from AGONAsport: Aris - PAOK, Greek SuperLeague matchday 7 derby on Sunday, October 22nd. Details here.

On October 7, AEK hosted Olympiacos in a crucial Super League derby at the Olympic Stadium, saving a dramatic point when Anastasios Bakasetas cancelled out Konstantinos Fortounis’ goal in the dying seconds. However, at half time, supporters of the reigning Greek champions engaged in conflict with riot police around the periphery of the arena and tear gas was used after firecrackers were launched.

The Disciplinary Committee handed AEK a three-point deduction from the Super League standings and ordered the Athenians to play two matches behind closed doors. Predictably, AEK submitted an appeal in an attempt to overturn the punishment, but reports on Friday revealed that it’s been rejected:

“The Appeals Committee formally rejects the appeal submitted by AEK FC against the decision no.165/2018 made by the Super League Disciplinary Committee.”

AEK now intend to make an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

The Kitrinomavri find themselves languishing in joint fifth place of the Super League table, trailing the leading pair of PAOK and Atromitos by six points. They will play Aris (October 28) and Atromitos (November 11) inside an empty OAKA.
