With a competitive title race forming between Olympiacos and PAOK along with a new playoff format, it is shaping up to be an exciting season in the Greek Super League 1. Thanks to a goals bonanza during the first half of the campaign, it’s also looking like it might be a historic one.

Thus far there have been a whopping 238 goals scored in the 91 games contested so far. That is a goals per game average equal to 2.62. That is the highest total amassed for league play since 2001/02 when a record-breaking level of 2.88 goals per game were scored.

One of the most incredible stats to come out of the goals breakdown this season is that there have been more matches played with three or more goals scored than with less than three goals scored. So far in the 2019/20 campaign there have been 46 matches where three or more goals have been scored compared to 45 with three or less. Whether this level can be maintained or raised remains to be seen, but it’s clear that the goals are flying in this season in Greece.

Other numbers of who, when, and how the goals were scored follow tradition. 60.5% of the goals this season or 144 of the 238 strikes have been scored by the home side while visiting teams have contributed 39.5% or 94 goals.

Shots have been the most popular type of goal scored with 163 or 68.49% coming in that manner. Headers are next with 33 tallies or 13.87% with penalties coming a close third with 31 and 13.03%. There have only been six free-kick goals all season (2.52%) which is a surprise as is the fact that there have been only five own goals (2.10%) over the 91 matches.

If the match is broken into 15-minute intervals then the most goals have been scored in the final stages with 55 goals (23.11%) coming between the 76-90th minutes. Just before halftime or more precisely the 31-45th minute sees the second highest total with 44 goals scored (18.49%) followed by the 61-75th minute when the net has been hit some 41 times (17.23%). The period just after halftime, the 46-60th minute has seen 36 goals (15.13%). The beginning of the match remains the time with the fewest goals scored as the 1-15th minute has had 33 goals (3.87%), just ahead of the 16-30th minute which comes in last as the least productive time period of matches with 29 goals (12.18%).
