Fortounis has been a re-born player under the leadership of Pedro Martins in Piraeus. After a couple of disappointing seasons, many thought Fortounis would never realise his potential, but the 26-year-old has been superb for Olympiacos with several excellent performances and crucial goals.

On Sunday, Fortounis once again took a leading role for Olympiacos, inspiring the Erythrolefki to an emphatic 5:0 triumph at Panetolikos in the Super League with two assists. Overall, the Greek international has tallied 15 goals and 15 assists in 39 matches in all tournaments, and he’s scored 10 markers and dished out eight assists in the Super League alone.

According to the Super League’s official database, the only time Fortounis registered a double-double (at least 10 goals and assists) in the Super League was in the 2015/2016 campaign, when Olympiacos comfortably became Greek champions with an incredible 28 wins in 30 matches. With three matches remaining in the current season, the midfielder requires two more assists to tally his second Super League double-double:

Interestingly, in accordance with statistics provided by Soccerbase, Fortounis is the first Olympiacos player since the legendary Predrag Djordjevic to earn at least 15 assists in all competitions in one specific season. In the 2002/2003 campaign, Djordjevic took 17 assists for Olympiacos, meaning Fortounis needs to add three more assists to his tally to break the Serbian’s long standing record:

Fortounis’ Olympiacos contract is due to expire in the summer of 2020, but if reports are to be believed, he is set to extend his deal with the Piraeus organisation through to 2023. Turkish giants Fenerbahce and Besiktas have expressed interest in signing Fortounis, but instead of moving across the Aegean, he would like to remain at Olympiacos.

Sunday also marked Olympiacos’ largest Super League victory on the road since the 2014/2015 season, in which the team thrashed Kalloni 5:0 away from home. It was Panetolikos’ heaviest defeat in Agrinio in their Super League history.
