Fortounis came through the Olympiacos system when starting out on his career, then playing for Trikala, Asteras Tripolis and Kaiserslautern before returning to Piraeus in July 2014. The attacking midfielder gradually became an integral part of the Olympiacos set-up, standing out with his ability to combine well with teammates and create scoring opportunities for himself. However, his progression has notably stalled, with Fortounis flattering to deceive in a difficult campaign for Olympiacos. As a result, the Piraeus outfit are ready to offload their former star man in the upcoming summer.

French giants Marseille are interested in Fortounis’ services, but the possible move depends largely on whether the club qualify for the UEFA Champions League. According to reports emerging from Greece, Olympiacos are eager to receive around seven million euros, however taking into account Fortounis’ disappointing season, the Thrylos will be lucky to sell the midfielder for over five million.

Besiktas, the current Turkish champions, have reportedly made contact with Fortounis’ agent surrounding the possible transfer. Alongside permanent deals, there is also a chance that either Marseille or Besiktas will take Fortounis on loan from Olympiacos for the 2018/2019 season. Fortounis is known to be ready to test himself abroad for the second time in his career and given his struggles, a transfer away from Olympiacos seems the best option for both parties.

Just a few years ago, Fortounis’ value was said to be 20 million, but that has been dramatically reduced to a maximum of seven. With Olympiacos planning a large summer clear-out, Fortounis is edging closer to moving towards the exit door.
