This following message from Grammenos was published in the programme:

“Dear friends of football,

With the new season starting, our national team returns to the Olympic Stadium as it continues its efforts in 2020 European Championship qualifying, hosting Liechtenstein. The team returns refreshed, with a new coaching staff from the Dutch football school with a new internal system, organisation, management and new players as it looks to become a competitive team for 2022 World Cup qualifying.

However, in the remaining Euro 2020 qualifying matches, the target to achieve the best possible result remains and your team needs you! I invite you to support our talented footballers with your presence; it is important to remember that alongside the result, the Greek national team is creating a new generation of fans who stay with the Ethniki, bringing a new football culture to the stadium and society. I welcome Kostas Konstantinidis, Takis Fyssas, the new coach John van ‘t Schip and his assistants Aron Winter and Michalis Valkanis to the national team. I wish them success.”

Greece subsequently drew 1-1 at home to lowly Liechtenstein at the Olympic Stadium in Athens.

At the moment, Greece occupy fifth position of Group J, trailing second-placed Finland by seven points after six rounds.
