EPO inform Skibbe no more slip ups allowed

Following the lacklustre defeat to Hungary in the UEFA Nationa League, Greek national team boss Michael Skibbe was supposedly summoned to a meeting with Hellenic Football Federation (EPO) chairman Evangelos Grammenos, creating uncertainty surrounding his future.

In the opening game of the newly created Nations League, the Ethniki Omada managed to pick up a valuable 1:0 victory against Estonia on the road, but the team then disappointed with a bitter 1:2 defeat to Hungary in Budapest. For long periods, Greece enjoyed plenty of possession, but a lack of cutting edge and poor defending put paid to any hopes of coming away with a result.

Taking into account the manner of defeat in Hungary, EPO chairman Evangelos Grammenos reportedly scheduled a meeting with current national team boss Michael Skibbe for Tuesday, eager to find out the reasons behind the underwhelming performance. According to SportFM, Skibbe was informed during that meeting that no more slip ups will be tolerated in the Nations League and if the Ethniki drop points in their next matches at home to Hungary or away to Finland in October, he will be sacked. The same report mentioned that former PAOK manager, Angelos Anastasidais, will be appointed the Ethniki’s new boss if Skibbe is given the boot.

Unrest among supporters is beginning to rapidly increase as many seem frustrated with Skibbe’s controversial selections for the squad. According to some reports, star striker Konstantinos Mitroglou revealed to the coaches that he was fit enough to start against Hungary, but Skibbe opted to keep him on the bench until half-time when Greece were trailing 1:2.

Greece return to UEFA Nations League action in October with two matches against Hungary in Athens (October 12) and Finland in Tampere (October 15).
