Greece edge France to advance
EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS - PRELIM. ROUND, GROUP D (MATCHDAY 3)
Greece’s men’s water polo team concluded group play at the European Championships with a 12-10 win over France, and have now secured their spot in the knockout stage.

Greece got off to a superb start, leading 3-1 over the French after the opening period of play, and later extending this lead to 6-2 by halftime. A strong third period from France saw them reduce Greece’s lead to 9-8. Nevertheless, the Greeks were solid in the fourth period and ultimately earned a 12-10 victory.
With five goals, Angelos Vlachopoulos was Greece’s top scorer. Ioannis Fountoulis and Konstantinos Genidounias each found the back of the net twice as well.
Greece will now play against Romania on Monday in the knockout stage, with the winner to advance to face Croatia in the quarterfinals.
