Despite having just 65 athletes as opposed to 132 back in 2015, the Greek team managed to win the same amount of medals as they had won at the last European Games. Additionally, Greece won three gold medals in Minsk (after winning just one in 2015), and finished 20th overall in the medal table (up from 28th in 2015). Unlike in 2015, where Greece won two medals in swimming and another two in water polo, aquatics were not a part of the 2019 Games, as many sports were removed completely from the European Games.
Christos Volikakis was arguably Greece’s best competitor, and he was rewarded by being the Greek flag bearer for the closing ceremony. The cyclist from Volos won two gold medals (in the points race and scratch race), and also had a fifth-place finish in the omnium. Another big highlight for the Greek team was Anna Korakaki’s performance in the shooting events. The 2016 Olympic gold and bronze medalist won another two medals here. First, she captured a silver in the 10 m air pistol, and then took the gold in the 25 m pistol. The 23-year-old from Drama in Macedonia also competed in three mixed shooting events with her younger brother, Dionysios, failing to win a medal together.
In addition to cycling and shooting, Greece also won medals in athletics (track and field), judo, karate, and sambo. The next European Games will take place in 2023 in Krakow, Poland.
